Community Settings

This is the final step (Step 4 of 4) in the community creation flow. Configure how your community operates — who can see it, who can join, what members can do, and when it goes live.

Communities > + Create > Category > Basic Info > Settings

  1. Complete Community Basic Info (Step 3).
  2. Tap Continue.
  3. You arrive at the Community Settings screen (Step 4 of 4).

The header shows “Community Settings” with “STEP 4 OF 4” below it.

At the top, you see the category you selected in Step 2, displayed with its icon. This confirms you are creating the right type of community. If you need to change the category, navigate back to the category selection step.

Choose who can find and join your community:

Anyone can find and join your community without approval.

  • Visible in community search
  • Anyone can join instantly
  • All content is visible to non-members

Best for: Open interest groups, public awareness communities, hobby clubs

Hidden from search. Only invited members can join.

  • Not visible in community search or directory
  • Members must be invited by an admin
  • Content is only visible to members

Best for: Family groups, private corporate teams, exclusive clubs

Visible in search but requires admin approval to join.

  • Visible in community search and directory
  • New members must request to join
  • Admin reviews and approves/declines each request
  • Content is only visible to approved members

Best for: Professional associations, gated communities, alumni groups with verification

Set a date when the community officially goes live and members can start joining.

  • Tap the date field to open a date picker
  • The description reads: “Schedule when members can join”
  • Leave empty to make the community active immediately

This is useful for planned launches — for example, setting up a community for a college reunion 3 months in advance and setting the start date to when you want to start onboarding members.

Toggle these settings to control what members can do:

When enabled, members can create posts and share content within the community. When disabled, only admins can post.

When enabled, members can share documents (PDFs, spreadsheets, etc.) in the community. When disabled, document sharing is restricted to admins.

When enabled, members or admins can create sub-communities (chapters, wings, cells) under this community. See Community Hierarchy for how sub-communities work.

When enabled, the community is locked — no new members can join even if they have the link. Existing members retain access. Use this to freeze membership at a specific count.

  1. Review all settings.
  2. Tap the Continue / Create button at the bottom.
  3. You may be taken to a review screen or onboarding questions screen.
  4. After final confirmation, the community is created.
  5. You are redirected to the Community Dashboard.

If you do not change any settings, the defaults are:

SettingDefault
VisibilityPublic
Allow PostingEnabled
Document SharingEnabled
Allow Sub-CommunityEnabled
LockDisabled
Start DateNone (active immediately)

I set the wrong visibility and already created the community. You can change visibility after creation. Go to Edit Community and update the visibility setting.

The Lock toggle is confusing — what does it actually do? When Lock is ON, no new members can join the community, even via a direct link. Existing members are unaffected. This is useful for closing membership after a registration deadline.

I want to add onboarding questions for new members. After creating the community, go to Edit Community where you can add custom onboarding questions that new members must answer before joining.

The community was created but I cannot find it in the list. If you set visibility to Private, the community will not appear in search for other users. For your own account, pull down to refresh the Communities List.
